As students at SLTC, you have access to many valuable resources that will set you up for success in your career. Explore all of the available assets and take advantage of the opportunity to set yourself apart while searching for employment opportunities.

Email 101

Communication with a prospective boss or employer can be nerve-racking. You want to make a good impression, but without losing your own personality and charm. Finding the balance between professional and stiff can be difficult, here are some tips.

Below are a few good things to remember when emailing a potential boss or employer. Remember to always be prompt when replying to emails, there's nothing worse than waiting around for a response!

  1. Choose a Professional email: Your first, middle, or last name. Something you would want to email your boss with. Example: JohnSmith@gmail.com or JASmith@yahoo.com.

  2. Always start with a greeting: Hello [Insert Name Here]

  3. Be polite and use good grammar spelling. If you're unsure, have a friend or family member look over the email before sending it. You could also consider using a grammar checking service like Grammarly.

  4. End with a: Thank you, or Look forward to hearing from you, to let them know that you appreciate their time and response.

  5. Set up a signature to end your emails with. Here are some signature templates and a guide for setting them up:

Adding some of these words to what you are writing will help to increase your professionalism in emails and resumes.

Interview Tips

Practice & Preparation is very important for an interview. Review the common job interview questions employers ask and practice your responses. Those questions include:

  • Tell me about yourself.

  • What attracted you to our company?

  • Tell me about your strengths and weaknesses.

  • Where do you see yourself in five years?

  • What do you know about our company?

  • Your answers should also emphasize the skills that are most important to the employer and relevant to the position. Be sure to review the job listing, make a list of the requirements, and match them to your experience.

In this day and age, virtual interviews are becoming increasingly common. If you have a video interview coming up, check out these tips to prepare for it.

Resume 101

Here are some tips on how to make a professional resume that will be most effective when job searching:

  • Customize your resume to be specific to the job you are applying for.

  • Only include RELEVANT work experience. Be sure to do a small summary of the skills you used or learned while working in that role that would apply to the job you are applying to. These summaries should be 3-4 sentences, or bullet points.

  • Include your contact information.

Below are some resume templates you can use to get started. You will also want to bring the ELP Training Summary with you to show companies what you have been trained in while at SLTC. Note: You must be logged into a Google Account to access the templates.
