The objective of the Electrical Lineworker Program (ELP) is to provide a method for students to embark on a meaningful and rewarding career in the electrical linework industry. This is accomplished by providing training methods that have proven to be extremely effective in preparing our grads to be highly successful employees. The first 2+ hours of every 8-hour day will be spent here. Students spend approximately 180 hours learning various subjects at the introductory level including: • Rigging • NESC • Electrical • Basic Metering • Basic Electricity • Substations • Career Planning & Strategies • System Operations • Personal Protective Grounding • Live Line Tools • Transformers • Maps & Standards Field Training Students spend approximately 320 hours in the field performing various introductory training activities. To successfully complete the program, each student must demonstrate that they can perform nearly 90 different competencies. For the better part of each 8-hour day, students will learn how to: • climb wood poles and steel towers • install crossarms and hardware on poles • perform various tasks in underground • install conductors and pole-line equipment • operate the equipment • learn to use various tools of the trade in simulated conditions Students will also receive training in distribution, substation and transmission. Certifications and Specialized Skills SLTC students will work to gain certifications in key training and safety areas: • 10-Hour OSHA Certification • First Aid/CPR • NSC Flagger’s Certification • Pole-Top Rescue • Bucket Truck Rescue • Class A CDL License • NCCCO Crane Certification* *This class is an elective. CDL Training & Licensing Working in the electrical power delivery industry will require for lineworkers to have a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). Having a CDL upon graduation will make students more marketable to companies and will increase their starting pay $1-$3 / hour higher then graduates without one.
