The conception of Southeast Lineman Training Center (SLTC) occurred in 1999 when George Nelson was approached about the need for quality trained apprentice lineworkers in the electric utility industry. With assistance from Randy Beckes, Dale Gaddis and NLC’s President Aaron Howell, Southeast Lineman Training Center was established. At that time, 19 acres were purchased, material & equipment building was constructed, and a 2,160 square foot administration building was put in place. SLTC’s first class was delivered on February 1, 2000 to 13 students. In 2002, SLTC added our ELP training building, which is approximately 2,800 square feet with classrooms and lab areas. Since then, SLTC training has expanded to include underground, metering, enclosed and confined space, vault rescue, bucket rescue and expansion of our training yard to include transmission training, which has been made possible with the help of Georgia Power Company. SLTC currently administers training to approximately 300 students per year. SLTC also conducts labs for NLC’s Power Delivery Program twice per year for utility companies that choose to use the Power Delivery Program. In December of 2004 SLTC broke ground on its 12,000 square foot administration building, which will allow SLTC to train up to 140 students in its two large classrooms. SLTC can accommodate over 200 students at one time with the addition of this building. The construction of SLTC’s substation is underway and is expected be completed by the end of 2007.
